Stimulation and development games for babies

The stimulation of the newborn begins from the moment he is born and smells his mother, hears her voice and feels the warmth of her skin. Even if we see our baby so tiny at just a few months old, there are many games that can help stimulate him, something that is vital in the 0 to 6 months stage. Take note!

During the first months of life, babies need, above all, stimulation for their five senses: touch, hearing, sight, smell and even taste. There are many stimulation games that parents can play with their child at this stage. Of course, if we see that our little one gets tired or cries, it is better to leave it for another time.

Baby Games: In mom's arms

The baby's main toys are his parents and, in the first months and whenever possible, especially his mother. Being in mom and dad's arms, listening to their voice, recognizing their smell, receiving their cuddles and snuggles... are stimulation games that awaken baby's curiosity about the world.

Don't be afraid to hold your baby in your arms for too long: it is never enough. Gently rocking, caressing, breastfeeding, offering your finger to hold with your baby's little hand are some of the activities that stimulate baby's tactile sensations.

Singing softly to him, laughing near him, talking to him and telling him what is around him or what you are going to do next helps to develop the hearing and intelligence of the newborn and helps parents to strengthen the bond with him.

Smile at him and make funny gestures while holding him in your arms, with your face close to his, about 25 to 30 centimeters away: this is the distance at which they can see best until they are three months old, since before that they do not focus their sight.

In the crib

In the first few months of life, babies spend many hours in the crib. Most newborns spend 16 to 17 hours a day sleeping, gradually increasing their waking time.

Crib mobiles entertain them and provide visual and auditory stimulation. Soft toys and stuffed animals stimulate their sense of touch, as do crib gyms, which make sounds when baby kicks them and help them begin to discover cause-and-effect relationships.

Change the crib toys from time to time, so that baby can continue to discover new stimuli. Until they are three or four months old, infants are not able to fixate on objects, but they do perceive movement, shapes and colors.

Lying on the stomach

The proper position for babies to sleep is on their backs, as this position has been shown to prevent sudden infant death. However, babies need to change position daily to prevent head deformities and improve their muscle tone.

This is why it is so important to place the baby on their stomach several times a day. It helps them to achieve a good extension of the spine and is the essential preliminary phase for them to be able to roll over or crawl later on. From four to six months, our little one will be strong enough to hold a small rattle or toy. Place your baby on his tummy with colorful toys and objects that make sounds that attract his attention. He will notice them and try to pick them up.

Lie down with him on the floor or on the bed, within his sight and at his height, and cuddle and cuddle him. The peek-a-boo, showing him a toy and covering it with a cloth or a cushion and showing it again, rolling a sound toy so that he follows it with his eyes or moving a rattle near his head so that he turns it in that direction are other activities that you can do with him on the floor from a very young age and that will awaken his curiosity.

In the bath

Bath time is a fantastic pre-sleep ritual, as it relaxes and entertains them. Feeling the water on their skin, safe in the hands of mom or dad, the scent of soap and cream, the sound of the water splashing, watching the foam or floating toys and trying to catch them is a feast for the senses of babies, also in the first months of life.

It is not necessary that the bath is very long, not even daily if our child does not enjoy too much in the water, but it will soon become one of his favorite moments of the day, and even more if we accompany the little while in the bathtub with a relaxing massage before or after the bath.

Go for a walk

Children need to sunbathe daily to synthesize vitamin D, which is essential for the correct assimilation of calcium and for this mineral to be deposited in their bones. But also, when walking in a stroller or in a backpack or sling, the baby perceives other sounds, smells and colors, feels variations in temperature and listens to us in a different situation than usual. He moves in a different way, he sways....

Whenever possible, take your baby outdoors and, if he is already able to sit up and the weather permits, let him experiment in the park with the textures of sand, leaves or plants and enjoy the swings adapted for babies.

At the table

The main food for babies in the first six months of life is breast milk. But from 5 or 6 months they start trying other foods to get used to new tastes.

Let your baby touch the food with his hands and put it in his mouth, let him experiment and have fun with the food, the spoon and his plate. Cold or hot? Hard or soft? Sweet or salty? Does his finger go in or can he hold on with his hand? What happens if we mix the ingredients that daddy has put on the plate? What if I spit it all out?

Food is a wonderful toy to share with your child. He will especially enjoy it in a few months, but by the end of the first semester it is already starting to be a lot of fun for him.
